Each year over $600 million dollars worth of food used for school lunches is wasted. At least that’s what the latest MindSumo ideation challenge tells me. Aside from our standard assessment challenges that ask students to take their time and present their solutions in great detail, we also host ideation or sourcing challenges which allow students to jot an idea down quickly. These ideation submissions are then sent “into the ring” to go head to head with other those from other solvers (or challengers if you will).
If an ideation challenge doesn’t interest a student, they can switch into rate mode and begin to mark challenges as “Smart!” or “Bleh!”. The challenges receiving the most “Smart!” votes working their way to the top of a leaderboard visual to all the students. The students with the highest ranked solutions at the end of the challenge receive a prize.
So how would you prevent the waste of food from school lunches? Ideas so far include ordering food items a la carte, prizes for the students who waste the least food, composting to create organic fertilizer from the waste, and simply reducing meal size. There are a lot of options for how to prevent food waste, so get over to the MindSumo ideation arena and start solving!
