Three Ways to Finish Strong at your Summer Internship
It’s the beginning of August. Semester schools are starting their welcome weeks and students around the country are wrapping up their internships. You’ve made it through interviews, long work weeks and the adjustment to the office lifestyle, but how do you close things out to make sure you leave a lasting impression on the people you worked with? Check out these tips to maximize the impact your internship has on your network, resume, and career as a whole.
1. Summarize What You Accomplished
When looking for your next job or internship, an interviewer will almost certainly ask what your responsibilities were at your last position. Big surprise: “Um, lots of stuff I guess” Is not a good answer. During the last few weeks of your internship, write a few bullet points about the projects you completed, what you did to accomplish them, and what the results were. This summary can be sent to your current supervisor, be added to your resume and LinkedIn, and even just serve as a good old pat-yourself-on-the-back to realize all you’ve achieved over the summer.
2. Set the Stage for Next Steps
Hopefully you’ve found an internship in a workplace you could see yourself launching your career in, but even if you have mixed feelings, let your employer know that you have high hopes for the future. Having successive internships with the same employer shows not only that you are loyal, but the quality of your work was so great that they wanted you back. Even if you don’t see a long term future following your internship, let your supervisor know you’re interested if only to keep your options open.
3. Write Thank You Notes
As an intern, a lot of the people you will be working with will take time out of their daily routine to ensure that not only you have project to be working on, but that you’re on the right track. Writing a note, dropping off a $5 coffee gift card, or even just a quick personal email thanking the team members you worked with will make certain that they remember you. One of the most important parts of completing an internship is to build your network. Ensure you leave a good impression by letting every individual know that you’re grateful for the guidance they provided.
Obtaining and completing a Summer Internship is an accomplishment in itself, but finishing strong with these tips will ensure you get the most out of your experience.
